Finnish President Sauli Niinisto responded to the call to close one of the Russian consulates in the country — according to the head of state, this may not make sense. Niinisto's words are quoted by the local broadcasting corporation YLE.

Earlier, a civil initiative appeared in Finland calling for the liquidation of the consulate in connection with the country's accession to NATO. According to activists, the work of the Russian diplomatic mission "restricts and endangers the security of Finland."

According to Niinisto, a big threat to Finland's security could be caused by satellite surveillance of its territory.

"The question arises, aren't satellite observations many times more effective today than ground-based physical observations? In this sense, the role of this consulate today may not be as great as it could have been in the past," he said.

At the same time, the President of Finland noted that Helsinki would immediately respond in case of violation of the rules of diplomacy by the consulate.
